- Analysis is performed locally on Pixel devices for data privacy.

Google is deploying a significant security upgrade for Android users this month, focusing on proactive protection against a variety of fraudulent activities, including phone scams and phishing attempts. This update aims to bolster user safety across the platform by integrating advanced AI capabilities.
The new Scam Detection feature, currently exclusive to Pixel 6 devices and newer with an active SIM card, is a key component of this rollout. Powered by the Gemini Nano AI model, it analyzes incoming calls as they happen to identify common scam tactics. For instance, it can flag calls where a scammer impersonates a bank employee or pressures users for sensitive information under duress.
Crucially, the entire scam detection process is conducted locally on the user's device. This on-device analysis ensures that audio data is never transferred to or processed by cloud servers, thereby guaranteeing robust data protection and user privacy. Users will receive automatic warnings if suspicious activity is detected during a call.
