Android Scams: New AI Defense Rolls Out
2 Jun
Summary
- New Android feature detects deepfake voice scams targeting contacts.
- Requires Google Phone, Contacts, and Messages apps for full function.
- AI fashion tools are expanding to more Android devices and Google Photos.

Google is enhancing Android's security with a new feature designed to combat deepfake voice scams that impersonate contacts. This system, available on devices running Android 12 and above, verifies incoming calls. It requires the Google Phone, Contacts, and Messages apps to function by checking for a confirmation signal from the purported caller's device.
If a call appears to be from a contact but lacks this verification signal, indicating a spoofed number, the user will receive an alert. However, this feature is contingent on the caller also having the same three Google apps installed. This initiative aims to mitigate financial losses, with the FTC reporting nearly $3 billion in losses from such scams in 2024.
Beyond security, Google is expanding its AI-driven fashion features. The 'Find the Look' capability within Circle to Search, originally on newer Pixel and Galaxy phones, is now available on devices running Android 14 and higher. This allows users to search for specific clothing items within images.
Furthermore, Google Photos will soon incorporate an AI fashion engine to catalog outfits and create virtual wardrobes, even generating AI images of users in those clothes. Separately, Google is broadening AirDrop support to more Android phones from manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo, and HONOR, improving file sharing between Android and Apple devices.
