Google has revealed significant upcoming changes for its Android operating system, focusing on AI, digital well-being, and creative tools. The platform will introduce AI features under the 'Gemini Intelligence' brand, such as Rambler, a real-time transcription tool that refines speech and corrects errors, and Create My Widget, allowing users to build custom widgets using natural language.
Beyond AI, Android 17 features an overhaul of its entire emoji set, introducing more detailed, three-dimensional designs. A new tool called Pause Point aims to improve digital well-being by adding a 10-second timer before opening distracting apps, with the option to require a phone restart to disable it.
Content creators will gain access to Screen Reactions, enabling simultaneous recording of the device screen and selfie camera. Security enhancements are also a focus, with improved malware detection and new features to combat scams and protect user data in case of theft.
These updates are rolling out progressively. Emoji and Screen Reactions will debut on Pixel phones this summer, with Gemini-powered features like Rambler and Create My Widget arriving on select Galaxy and Pixel phones in the summer. Broader support for features like Quick Share is expected to reach more manufacturers throughout the year.
