Summary
- Avataar, India's first amphibious drone, operates in air and water.
- It can carry 10 kg payloads and transitions seamlessly between environments.
- The drone has potential defense applications and commercial uses.
Bengaluru-based AquaAirX has unveiled Avataar, an Indian-developed amphibious drone designed to operate in both air and underwater environments. This groundbreaking technology allows the drone to fly, dive into water, conduct underwater missions, and then re-emerge for continued aerial operations. Avataar can carry payloads of up to 10 kg, offering expanded capabilities for unmanned systems.
The concept originated from a desire to bridge the gap between aerial drones and underwater vehicles, which often require complex deployment. Avataar aims for rapid deployment without large vessels, significantly cutting costs and time.
Defense applications are a key focus, especially for maritime warfare, where its ability to fly from shore, dive to avoid detection, and operate submerged could change mission dynamics. The drone is being designed with a 175-nautical mile range and five-hour endurance, supporting various modular payloads like ISR sensors and sonar systems.
Beyond defense, Avataar has commercial potential in marine monitoring for sea farms and inspecting offshore infrastructure such as oil and gas platforms and wind farms. The company has received interest from the Indian Navy and is expected to have a fully operational drone within six to eight months.
AquaAirX has secured funding from investors, including Rainmatter and Prime Venture Partners, to accelerate its research and development and bring the platform to operational deployment by the end of 2026.
