AMD rig beats ChatGPT on price
14 Sep
Summary
- Dual AMD R9700 GPUs cost $18,775 for AI inference.
- Workstation beats GPT-5.6 Sol on cost within hours weekly.
- Generating over 20 million tokens monthly saves $11,738 yearly.

A recent hardware review compared a dual-GPU AMD workstation against cloud AI subscription models to determine long-term cost-effectiveness. The tested workstation, equipped with two AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 cards, has an initial cost of approximately $18,775.
This setup was evaluated for electricity consumption, token throughput, and amortized hardware costs, then pitted against various cloud subscription tiers. Cloud providers charge per million tokens, with prices varying from $1.20 for GPT-5.6 Luna to $30 for GPT-5.6 Sol.
When operating at 320.2 tokens per second using Multi-Token Prediction, the AMD workstation breaks even with GPT-5.6 Sol on cost in just 3.5 hours of weekly use. A team generating over 20 million tokens monthly can save around $11,738 annually against Sol pricing.
However, the economic advantage diminishes for cheaper cloud models like GPT-5.6 Luna. For such services, the AMD rig would require nearly constant operation to match the subscription cost. Electricity draw was found to be a minor factor, with both cards consuming between 310 and 510 watts under load.
For smaller workloads or organizations, a single R9700 card offers a more accessible entry point, costing $1,880 and providing a lower break-even cost. This single-card solution is capable of handling eight billion parameter AI models, processing 34.5 tokens per second.
Despite the cost benefits, locally run models on AMD hardware may trail top cloud systems in complex reasoning benchmarks. For instance, a 27-billion parameter AMD model scored 37 points on an independent intelligence index, compared to Gemini 3.1 Pro's score of 46.
