Amazon Pulls Plug on Vintage Kindles This May
8 Apr
Summary
- Older Kindles lose access to purchase and download books on May 20.
- Devices deregistered or factory reset will be unregisterable.
- Affected users receive a 20% discount on new Kindles.

Amazon is ending support for its earliest Kindle and Kindle Fire devices starting May 20, 2026. This sunset affects first to fifth-generation models, including those released in 2012 and earlier. Users will retain access to previously downloaded books but will be unable to purchase, borrow, or download new content on these devices after the specified date.
Furthermore, any Kindle device that has been deregistered or factory reset will be permanently unusable, as re-registration will not be possible post-May 20. Amazon is extending an offer to affected users, providing a 20% discount on new Kindle devices and a $20 ebook credit, valid until June 20, 2026.
The affected devices include the Kindle 1st generation (2007) through Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation (2012), as well as several Kindle Fire models released between 2011 and 2012. While these devices will still function for reading downloaded content, Amazon encourages upgrades for continued access to the Kindle Store and improved performance.
