Amazon Leo Sparks Rural Internet Revolution in South Africa

Amazon Leo, the low-earth orbit satellite internet venture by Amazon, has joined forces with South Africa's largest fixed internet provider, Herotel. This strategic agreement will introduce a new broadband service named evry, specifically designed to reach communities that are currently underserved by reliable internet access.

The new evry service is projected to commence commercial operations in 2027, with an initial focus on residential customers. This initiative is particularly significant as it seeks to address the persistent connectivity gap in South Africa, where millions residing in farms, small towns, and remote areas remain disconnected.

Conventional fiber and wireless networks are often not economically viable for deployment in these dispersed locations. Amazon Leo and Herotel assert that their partnership will overcome these barriers, providing essential internet access for work, education, and access to vital services. Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, David Zapolsky, emphasized the goal of breaking down barriers and unlocking opportunities.

Herotel, which is owned by Maziv, possesses an extensive network across South Africa, serving over 350,000 customers in more than 550 towns. The company's established footprint will facilitate the installation, customer service, and field operations necessary for the satellite service from its inception. Earlier this year, Amazon Leo also established a similar agreement with Vodacom, a subsidiary of Vodafone, to enhance network connectivity in remote African locations.
