Amazon has unveiled a significant update for its Echo Dot, introducing a custom-designed AZ3 chip for on-device AI processing. This upgrade allows for more natural and responsive conversations with Alexa, as voice commands are processed locally rather than sent to a data center. The new Echo Dot also boasts an enhanced smart home hub capability, supporting Zigbee, Matter, and Thread protocols to manage thousands of compatible devices.
Furthermore, the compact speaker now functions as an eero Wi-Fi extender, capable of extending an existing eero network by up to 1,000 feet, which helps eliminate dead zones. Amazon has also improved audio quality with a full-range driver for better bass and clearer vocals. A specialized Amazon Kids Echo Dot is also available, including a year of Kids+ subscription, with both models offered in various colors and designs.
