AI Incident Disrupts Amazon China Cloud Services
21 Feb
Summary
- A 13-hour disruption affected a single AWS service in China.
- Amazon attributes the incident to user error, not AI failure.
- New safeguards were implemented following the event.

In December of last year, a limited interruption occurred within Amazon Web Services, affecting a single service in one of its two Mainland China Regions. This event, lasting 13 hours, impacted AWS Cost Explorer. Amazon clarified that compute, storage, database, and AI technologies were not affected.
Amazon Web Services stated the root cause was user error involving misconfigured access controls, refuting claims that AI was at fault. Following this incident, AWS implemented several new safeguards. These include mandatory peer review for all production access, enhanced training for AI-assisted troubleshooting, and stronger resource protection measures to prevent similar events.
