AirTag Safety: How to Detect Unwanted Tracking
21 Feb
Summary
- AirTags use Bluetooth and nearby devices to update locations.
- Alerts notify users of unknown trackers moving with them.
- Both iPhone and Android devices can receive tracking warnings.
Apple has integrated robust safety features into its AirTag and the Find My network to mitigate concerns about unwanted tracking. These devices utilize Bluetooth signals and nearby compatible devices to broadcast their location, allowing for real-time updates. The system is designed to proactively alert individuals if a tracker not associated with their Apple account is detected traveling with them.
Users on both iPhone and Android platforms can receive notifications if an unknown tracker is present. For iPhone users, these alerts are typically enabled by default, but users are advised to verify their settings within Privacy & Security. On Android devices, similar alerts are automatic on supported versions, and Apple also offers a dedicated Tracker Detect app.
If an AirTag or similar device is separated from its owner and remains with another person for an extended period, it may emit an audible sound. This feature, along with on-screen notifications, helps draw attention to the presence of an unauthorized tracker. Users can then use their device's features, such as playing a sound or Precision Finding, to locate and disable the detected tracker if necessary.
