AI Promises Productivity, Delivers Little Value
16 Sep
Summary
- Over 80% of executives report personal AI productivity gains.
- Only 37% of executives see measurable EBIT improvement from AI.
- A mere 6% of companies report significant investor value from AI.

McKinsey Senior Partner Kate Smaje addressed a widening chasm between AI adoption and concrete business value. She highlighted that while more than 80% of executives personally benefit from AI, leading to productivity gains, this seldom translates into broad financial success.
Fewer than half of these executives, approximately 37%, observe measurable improvements in their company's earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT). Alarmingly, only a small fraction, around 6%, perceive that AI is delivering substantial value to investors. This disparity underscores a critical challenge in leveraging AI for significant, measurable business outcomes.
