Summary
- AI technology scans surveillance for firearms, alerting reviewers.
- System aims to reduce response time from 90 seconds to under 10.
- Angel Protection works with schools, hospitals, and government sites.

Angel Protection, a company founded in the wake of the 2022 Uvalde mass shooting, is developing AI technology designed to identify potential shooters before an attack occurs. The system integrates with existing surveillance cameras, simultaneously scanning for firearms. If a weapon is detected, it alerts a human reviewer at Angel Protection's monitoring center.
This technology aims to significantly reduce the time between the first shots fired and the notification of 911, a process that currently averages 90 seconds. Angel Protection claims their system can achieve this response time in under 10 seconds by identifying a shooter and alerting law enforcement with precise location data and a photograph.
Lewis Matthews, the founder and CEO, emphasizes the data-driven approach, aiming to measure and improve the system's effectiveness. While privacy concerns exist regarding AI surveillance, Angel Protection states that data processing is done on-site, and alerts are only generated when a threat is identified. The company is currently working with schools, hospitals, and government sites, monitoring approximately 2,500 cameras in Texas.
