The AI Security Institute's investigation, a systematic analysis of AI persuasiveness, involved nearly 80,000 individuals interacting with 19 different AI models. The study highlighted that "information-dense" outputs, often achieved through post-training adjustments and reward models, significantly boosted an AI's ability to persuade. Interestingly, instructing models to focus on facts and evidence yielded the largest persuasion gains, but these same models tended to be less accurate.
Experts suggest that AI's power to generate information rapidly could surpass even elite human persuaders. While factors like user engagement time and inherent human psychological limits may present barriers to manipulation, the findings underscore the need for vigilance. The study underscores the potential for AI to be more manipulative than compelling humans due to its sheer output capacity.
