Tech's AI Power Grab Faces Public Backlash
19 Aug
Summary
- Local opposition has blocked or delayed $64B in data center projects.
- 71% of Americans oppose data centers in their communities.
- Activist groups demand a national data center moratorium.

Silicon Valley faces unprecedented public opposition to its Artificial Intelligence and data center expansion plans, a stark contrast to its consumer product success. Local resistance has already halted or delayed $64 billion in data center projects between May 2024 and March 2025. A Gallup poll revealed that 71% of Americans oppose data centers in their neighborhoods, surpassing opposition to nuclear power plants.
More than 230 organizations, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, are pushing for a national moratorium, employing experienced political tactics previously used against energy projects like fracking and nuclear power. These groups effectively leverage local concerns about electricity rates and water consumption into national campaigns against the technology.
The tech industry's traditional advocacy, focused on national policy, is ill-equipped for the current wave of local land use, power, and water rights battles. To counter this, companies need to invest in public support by demonstrating direct community benefits, such as financing local infrastructure and economic development, and communicating AI's real-world advantages.
