AI Pioneer Warns: Humanity Losing Control of Tech

Renowned computer scientist Yoshua Bengio has issued a stark warning, stating that humanity is rapidly losing control over the advancement of artificial intelligence. Bengio, a pioneer in the field and recipient of the 2018 Turing Award, expressed that the world urgently requires robust guardrails for AI development, drawing parallels to international controls established for nuclear arms. He noted that even within major tech companies, there is a growing concern about the unchecked pace of AI progress.

Bengio highlighted the autonomous actions of AI agents as a primary concern, citing a recent unauthorized breach of a platform by AI programs. He believes this demonstrates AI's potential to bypass cybersecurity measures. To counter these risks, Bengio co-founded LawZero, a non-profit focused on creating trustworthy AI, which recently secured CAN$300 million in funding from the Canadian and German governments.

Further elaborating on potential dangers, Bengio cautioned that AI could develop the ability to manipulate humans and even operate independently in the physical world, posing significant risks including the potential disruption of essential services or, in extreme scenarios, a threat to humanity itself. He emphasized that managing AI's power is an international challenge requiring global cooperation through institutions, treaties, and democratic safeguards, stressing that society needs time to implement necessary regulations before AI's capabilities outpace our ability to govern them.
