AI Agents Steal Restaurant Reservations
26 Sep
Summary
- AI agents are now competing for restaurant bookings.
- Booking platforms like OpenTable and Resy ban automated systems.
- Users face account bans for using AI reservation bots.

Securing reservations at highly sought-after restaurants is increasingly difficult, partly due to a new wave of AI agents competing with human patrons. These personal AI agents monitor booking systems for cancellations and openings, making it harder for individuals to obtain a table. Booking platforms are implementing measures against this practice, with OpenTable and Resy explicitly prohibiting automated systems in their terms of service.
Users employing AI agents to secure reservations risk account suspension. Brian Distelburger and JC Bahr-de Stefano both experienced bans from Resy for excessive automated requests. One user's agent made around 200 API requests per hour, leading to a temporary ban and a stern warning about future misuse. This crackdown aims to maintain a fair reservation experience for all diners.
Despite these measures, AI integration continues, with platforms partnering with AI technologies for features like availability alerts and in-chatbot bookings. However, these integrations do not allow users to bypass queues like dedicated reservation agents. Experts suggest that while AI may change reservation dynamics, the core hospitality of sit-down restaurants will likely persist.
