Budget Telescopes: Big Views, Small Price Tag

New smart telescopes priced under $400 are lowering the barrier to entry for astrophotography and wildlife photography. Models like the Dwarf Mini and ZWO Seestar S30 offer portability, a key advantage for those needing to travel to darker skies or remote wildlife locations. Their compact designs weigh significantly less than high-end telescopes, which often exceed 4 kilograms.

While these budget options may have lower resolution and smaller apertures, they provide a valuable test for beginners to gauge their interest in more expensive gear. Both telescopes feature built-in filters and come with magnetic solar filters. Unlike pricier models focused solely on astronomy, these also accommodate wildlife and landscape photography.

The Dwarf Mini excels in its lightweight design and swift setup, weighing about half as much as the Seestar S30. Its battery life also proved more consistent in testing. The Seestar S30, however, offers greater stability with its included tripod and carrying case, along with superior smart tracking for moving objects during daytime photography.

In image performance, the Dwarf Mini demonstrated advantages in capturing the sun and moon, producing sharper results. The Seestar S30, however, delivered more exceptional images of stars and galaxies, with its post-processing tools yielding slightly preferred results. For landscapes, the Seestar's timelapse function produced clearer images, while the Dwarf's wildlife tracking was efficient.
