Tiny SSD Packs Rugged Power, But At A Price
17 Feb
Summary
- New tiny SSD offers rugged durability with IP68 rating.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 speeds up to 2,000MBps are supported.
- Pricing is higher than comparable SSDs at launch.

ADATA has launched the SD820, a compact and rugged external SSD designed for demanding environments. This tiny drive, measuring just 0.5 by 1.5 by 2.8 inches, offers robust protection with an IP68 rating, making it dustproof and waterproof up to 3 feet for 30 minutes. It also survives drops from up to four feet.
The SD820 leverages USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 technology to achieve sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,000MBps, nearly doubling the throughput of USB 3.2 Gen 2 drives. To achieve these speeds, a compatible computer or expansion card is required. The drive comes preformatted in exFAT for broad compatibility across devices.
Despite its impressive specifications and durable design, the SD820's launch pricing is on the higher side. Available in capacities up to 4TB, its cost per gigabyte exceeds that of similar USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 SSDs, including ADATA's own SD810 model. This premium pricing is attributed partly to industry-wide NAND flash memory shortages and a shift in manufacturer focus.
