Summary
- 2026 World Cup balls feature motion sensors for game decisions.
- Each ball requires a 90-minute wireless charge for 6 hours of use.
- This is the first World Cup co-hosted by three nations.

The official match balls for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off later this year, will incorporate advanced motion sensor technology. Manufactured by Adidas, these balls feature a 500Hz inertial measurement unit motion sensor chip that meticulously tracks each touch. This data is transmitted to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, aiding officials in making crucial decisions regarding offsides, handballs, and other common match incidents.
To ensure optimal performance throughout the games, each ball must be wirelessly charged via specialized stations. This process takes approximately 90 minutes to achieve a full charge, providing about 6 hours of active use. Unlike the balls used in the 2022 World Cup, the 2026 series has its sensor embedded into the side of the ball, enhancing its functionality.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 19, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Matches will be played across 16 cities, marking the first time the tournament will expand to include 48 teams, a significant increase from the previous 32-team format.
