Wheeler's 2,000 Strikeout Milestone: A Triumph Over Injury

Zack Wheeler reached a career milestone on Tuesday night, recording his 2,000th strikeout in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He achieved this accomplishment by striking out Garrett Mitchell, Jackson Chourio, and Brice Turang in quick succession. Wheeler continued his dominant performance, striking out seven consecutive Brewers batters to begin the game, a feat no other Phillies pitcher had accomplished to start a game.

The 36-year-old Wheeler is now the 96th pitcher in major league history to achieve 2,000 strikeouts. This significant achievement comes almost a year after a surgeon removed his top rib in St. Louis to address a circulation problem in his arm. The issue began in August 2025, when Wheeler experienced heaviness in his right shoulder, leading to the diagnosis of venous thoracic outlet syndrome.

Despite the serious surgery that caused him to miss the remainder of the 2025 season and the playoffs, Wheeler has made a strong return. He pitched his first game back on April 25, 2026, with a pitch count limit. Entering Tuesday's game, he had a 13-5 record, a 2.99 ERA, and 177 strikeouts in 150.2 innings. His recent starts showed impressive form, allowing only three runs in 26 innings over his previous four starts.
