IPL Star Chahal Sparks Controversy Over Vaping Video
9 May
Summary
- Yuzvendra Chahal allegedly seen vaping on a Punjab Kings team flight.
- Former spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan demands stricter penalties.
- BCCI reiterates strict ban on vapes and e-cigarettes at IPL venues.

A video purportedly showing Indian Premier League (IPL) cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal vaping on a Punjab Kings team flight has ignited controversy. The clip, which surfaced on social media, appears to capture the spinner attempting to conceal the use of an electronic cigarette. The footage reportedly originated from a podcast shared by teammate Arshdeep Singh.
Former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan voiced strong disapproval, highlighting that vaping products are banned in India. He argued that penalties like a 25% match fee fine, as recently imposed on Riyan Parag for a similar offense, are insufficient. Sivaramakrishnan questioned the enforcement of laws and contrasted potential actions against a player with those against a regular citizen.
The controversy emerges shortly after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a directive reinforcing the ban on vapes and e-cigarettes. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reminded all IPL franchises that these items are prohibited under Indian law and strictly banned at all tournament venues, team hotels, and practice facilities, citing recent instances of violations.
