Summary
- Weathers is implementing new training methods for better health and consistency.
- He showed velocity up to 98.5 mph during live batting practice.
- The Yankees acquired him to bolster their rotation due to injuries.

New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Weathers is adopting a new approach centered on health and consistency for the upcoming season. He has incorporated specialized training, including hanging exercises, to address past durability issues and improve his overall conditioning. Weathers recently showcased promising velocity, reaching 98.5 mph during live batting practice at spring training.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about Weathers' progress, noting his strong velocity and effective changeups. Boone indicated that Weathers' workload and physical preparation are in good standing for this early stage of camp. The Yankees acquired Weathers in January, recognizing the need for depth in their starting rotation.
Several key pitchers, including Carlos Rodón, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt, are sidelined with injuries, with their returns expected at various points from May through the second half of the season. Weathers, along with Max Fried and others, is expected to help fill the rotation gaps until the injured starters are healthy.
Despite being a high draft pick and the son of former MLB pitcher David Weathers, Ryan has struggled with injuries throughout his career, never pitching more than 94 2/3 innings in a full season. He experienced significant injury setbacks in 2024 and 2025, impacting his playing time.
Weathers believes his recent injuries were not due to mechanical flaws but rather a need for better preparation and "working smarter." He has focused on addressing lower body tightness and ensuring his body is ready for all throwing activities, even simple catch play. This diligent approach aims to help him maintain a rotation spot until the Yankees' ace pitchers return.
