New York Yankees rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. departed the second game of Saturday's doubleheader due to right knee discomfort. The team confirmed the injury during the contest. Lombard was undergoing imaging tests at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The discomfort arose in the second inning when Lombard twisted his knee awkwardly on a pitch. He managed to stay in the game, even singling to left field on the next pitch after grimacing and flexing his knee.
Despite remaining in for defense in the third inning and taking another at-bat, manager Aaron Boone opted to remove Lombard from the lineup before the top of the fourth. José Caballero shifted to shortstop, and Amed Rosario entered the game at second base.
Lombard, 21, had played every inning since his August 4th debut. In 23 games, he has a .253 batting average with two home runs.
