MLB Cracks Down on Caballero's Pitch Clock Tactics

Major League Baseball has recently intensified scrutiny on Yankees shortstop José Caballero's pre-pitch routine, which he had perfected to leverage the pitch clock. Caballero's method involved strategically delaying eye contact with the pitcher until the last possible moment, aiming to pressure them and gain an advantage.

This tactic, used since his minor league days, led to frequent disagreements with opposing pitchers and umpires. MLB recently instructed umpires to enforce an existing rule prohibiting hitters from deceiving pitchers into starting their motion. The league's sudden focus followed an incident where Caballero's clock manipulation caused an altercation with a Pirates pitcher.

During a recent game, Caballero received a pitch-clock violation for this routine, which also resulted in an argument and his hitting coach being ejected. Caballero maintains his routine is not deceptive, as he performs it consistently. Yankees manager Aaron Boone criticized the league's handling of the situation, calling it 'embarrassing' due to the lack of prior warning to the player and team.
