New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is unlikely to participate in the upcoming Wild Card Series due to a sore right calf. Manager Aaron Boone announced on Tuesday that Judge received a platelet-rich plasma injection during the team's off-day on Monday to address the injury.
Boone stated that the team is planning for Judge's absence from the Wild Card Series, which is about a week away. He acknowledged that while typical recovery ranges for such injuries are two to six weeks, he isn't completely ruling out a return, but it's not expected. Judge was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a moderate strain of his soleus muscle, located in his lower calf.
The star player is eligible to be activated for the regular-season finale on Sunday against Baltimore but will have limited activity in the coming days. Judge originally injured his calf last Wednesday in Minnesota, experiencing discomfort that led to him being lifted for a pinch hitter as a precautionary measure. An MRI later revealed the strain after symptoms persisted.
Judge had recently returned on September 8th from a broken rib that sidelined him for over three months. In seven games since his return, he recorded a .241 batting average with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs in 66 games played this year. The Yankees, who have a record of 48-41 in games Judge has missed and 41-25 in games he has played, are facing elimination from the AL East race.
