Free Agency Looms for Tillman After Sparse Hornets Run

Xavier Tillman Sr.'s tenure with the Charlotte Hornets, following a mid-season trade from the Memphis Grizzlies, has been marked by a significant decrease in playing time. Originally averaging more minutes with the Grizzlies, his role diminished sharply upon arrival in Boston and continued to shrink after his subsequent trade to Charlotte. This move, which occurred around the February trade deadline, was reportedly driven by Boston's need to get below the luxury tax threshold.

The Hornets acquired Tillman Sr. for a 2030 second-round pick, with Boston also including $3.5 million in cash considerations. However, since joining Charlotte, Tillman Sr. has seen his minutes nearly disappear, appearing in just 16 games and averaging less than five minutes per contest. During this limited playtime, his statistical output was minimal, with 0.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. His shooting struggles were also evident, as he missed all his three-point attempts and shot only 40% from the field and 25% from the free-throw line.

Looking ahead to the 2026-27 NBA season, Xavier Tillman Sr. is set to become an unrestricted free agent. This places his future with the Hornets in significant doubt, and he may require a change of scenery to secure more playing time and re-establish his NBA career.
