WTA Flags: U.S. Stars Unaffected by Iran Crisis Rumors
1 Mar
Summary
- Rumors of USA flags being removed from WTA website were false.
- Only Russian and Belarusian players currently lack national flags.
- Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend will compete at the Indian Wells Open.

False rumors circulated on X claiming the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) removed the flags of American players due to the United States' involvement in recent strikes against Iran. These claims have been debunked, as national flags for stars like Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys remain visible on the WTA website.
The misinformation stemmed from recent geopolitical events, including a U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, followed by retaliatory strikes by Iran across the Middle East. Despite these events, the WTA has not removed the U.S. flags.
Currently, the only players whose national flags are absent from the WTA website are from Russia and Belarus. This is a consequence of Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine, impacting players such as Mirra Andreeva and Aryna Sabalenka.
Looking ahead to upcoming tournaments, American tennis stars Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend are scheduled to compete at the Indian Wells Open, taking place from March 4 to March 15. Gauff recently reached the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Townsend is competing in the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, participating in both singles and doubles events. At Indian Wells, Gauff will feature in the women's singles main draw, while Townsend will compete in the women's doubles main draw and singles qualification matches.
