In a fitting tribute, the town of Wrexham is set to honor its beloved football icon Joey Jones with a statue in front of the new Kop Stand starting next year. Jones, affectionately known as "Mr. Wrexham," passed away last month at the age of 70, prompting an outpouring of grief from the community he served for over five decades.
Last month, around 2,000 fans gathered at the Racecourse Ground to bid a final farewell to Jones, a two-time European Cup winner with Liverpool in the late 1970s. The emotional ceremony was attended by a host of football greats, including Jones' former Liverpool teammates Kenny Dalglish and Ian Callaghan, as well as Welsh legends Mark Hughes, Ian Rush, and Kevin Ratcliffe.
Jones' playing career spanned several clubs, including Wrexham, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Huddersfield Town, where he was a fan favorite. Beyond his exploits on the pitch, Jones also served Wrexham as a first-team coach, youth coach, and even a brief stint as interim manager, cementing his legacy as a true club icon.
The outpouring of support since Jones' passing has been a testament to the impact he had on the Wrexham community. His former teammate and lifelong friend Mickey Thomas described him as a "special man" who would likely have been "a bit embarrassed by the fuss" over his passing.
