Marathon Gets Its Own World Championship in 2030

A major overhaul of the distance running calendar by World Athletics will introduce a standalone World Marathon Championship beginning in 2030. The marathon will continue to be part of the main World Athletics Championships in 2027 and 2029, but will branch off into its own event from 2030. Consequently, the marathon will no longer be contested at the World Championships starting in 2031.

This new World Marathon Championship is planned to be an annual event, with alternating years for men's and women's competitions. World Athletics has initiated discussions with Athens, the birthplace of the marathon, regarding the possibility of hosting the first championship. The annual Road Running Championships will continue as a distinct event under this new strategic roadmap.
