The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to debut an innovative opening event, with Balich Wonder Studio (BWS) directing ceremonies across three host countries. This marks the first time a single creative studio will manage synchronized opening events for both the Winter Olympics and a FIFA World Cup in the same year. The ceremonies will commence on June 11, 2026, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, followed by coordinated events on June 12 in Los Angeles and Toronto.
Each 30-minute ceremony, plus protocol, will be performed in the local language and linked by a unified theme that interprets the tournament through each nation's unique culture. BWS founder Marco Balich highlighted the aim to foster unity among the three host countries. Unlike the Olympics, these World Cup ceremonies will be shorter and more streamlined, preparing the pitch for immediate match play.
An international roster of artists, including Katy Perry, Alanis Morissette, and Shakira, is expected to perform. The project has involved a core team of approximately 30 people in Milan working for 18 months, supported by around 300 staff in each host country, totaling nearly 900 personnel. FIFA is funding the undisclosed but significant investment.
