In a dramatic conclusion to Group A of the Women's Asian Cup, South Korea held host Australia to a 3-3 draw on Sunday, securing the top spot in the group. The thrilling encounter in Sydney saw both teams finish with seven points, with South Korea advancing due to a superior goal difference.
Australia will face a challenging quarterfinal against either North Korea or China, while South Korea remains in Sydney to compete against one of the best third-placed teams. The match itself was a back-and-forth affair, with South Korea initially taking the lead through Mun Eun-ju on a counterattack in the 14th minute.
Australia responded with goals from Alanna Kennedy in the 32nd minute and Sam Kerr just before halftime, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. However, South Korea equalized from a penalty converted by Kim Shin-ji in the 53rd minute and then took the lead through Kang Chae-rim three minutes later.
Despite Alanna Kennedy scoring her second goal in stoppage time, it was not enough to secure a win for Australia. The final 3-3 scoreline grants South Korea a more favorable path in the knockout stages of the tournament.
