Women Cricketers' Safety Under Fire at Bangladesh High Court

The Bangladesh High Court has initiated a review into the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) measures for ensuring the safety of its women cricketers, particularly concerning allegations of sexual harassment. A rule was issued by the court asking why the board's alleged failure to create a secure and gender-sensitive environment for its female athletes should not be considered unlawful and against public interest.

The court has mandated that the BCB must promptly adhere to its existing anti-sexual harassment policy, following previous judicial guidelines. Furthermore, the board is required to submit a report detailing the steps taken to implement these safety measures while the case is under judicial consideration.

This legal action was prompted by a petition filed by former national shooter Sabrina Sultana. The petition highlighted concerns over the handling of sexual harassment allegations involving Jahanara Alam, the former captain of the Bangladesh women's cricket team. Despite the BCB forming an inquiry committee, its report has not been publicly released, and its submission has reportedly been delayed, causing dissatisfaction.

The High Court bench has issued both the rule and an interim order, seeking accountability and demanding concrete actions to protect women athletes and ensure a safe sporting environment.
