WNBA Offseason Frenzy: Expansion, Free Agency & Draft Mania!
23 Mar
Summary
- New CBA ushers in historic offseason with unprecedented player compensation.
- Two expansion teams face rapid roster building through draft and free agency.
- Key offseason events condensed into a tight April window before training camp.

The WNBA's 30th season will commence on May 8th, following an intense 46-day offseason period. A recently ratified collective bargaining agreement (CBA) has been described as "transformational," significantly increasing player compensation and shaping the league's future. This new CBA has accelerated key offseason events, including an expansion draft and a massive free agency period, all scheduled between April 1-13.
The league is welcoming two new expansion teams, the Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire, who must construct their rosters quickly. The expansion draft is set for April 6th, where existing teams will protect players, and the new teams will select their rosters. This process is complicated by the high number of unrestricted free agents this offseason.
Free agency officially opens on April 9th, with player signings on April 12th, a stark contrast to the usual three-week period. This historic free agency class features over 100 players, including MVPs A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Player earnings are set to skyrocket, with the salary cap at $7 million and supermax contracts reaching $1.4 million.
The offseason culminates with the WNBA Draft on April 13th in New York City. The draft will feature 45 total picks across three rounds, accommodating the expanded league. The Dallas Wings hold the No. 1 pick. This compressed schedule means many teams will finalize their rosters just before training camps open on April 19th.
