Record Condom Rush: Olympics Stock Depleted in Days
13 Feb
Summary
- Condom supplies for Winter Olympics athletes depleted in three days.
- Fewer than 10,000 condoms were provided for the Winter Games.
- Condom distribution began in 1988 to prevent STDs among athletes.

Free condoms provided to competitors at the Winter Olympics were completely depleted within a record-breaking three days. An anonymous athlete shared with La Stampa that the initial supply ran out quickly, and uncertainty surrounds when restocking will occur. The report suggests Olympic organizers were not generous with the initial numbers. Significantly fewer condoms were allocated for these Winter Games compared to the Paris Olympics, which provided 300,000.
Despite the smaller number of athletes competing in the Winter Games (just under 3,000) compared to the Paris Games (around 10,500), the condom supply was notably lower. Lombardy region governor Attilio Fontana defended the provision of condoms, calling it an established Olympic practice that began in Seoul in 1988 to raise awareness about sexually transmitted disease prevention. A Spanish figure skater, Olivia Smart, shared a viral video showcasing the condoms, stamped with the Lombardy Region logo.
