Wimbledon Expansion Fight Back in Court
16 Jan
Summary
- Wimbledon plans to treble grounds size for new courts.
- Campaigners argue land is subject to a public trust.
- AELTC seeks court ruling to dismiss trust claims.

The prestigious Wimbledon tennis tournament is embroiled in a new legal battle over its significant expansion plans. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) aims to acquire a neighboring former golf course to nearly treble the size of its grounds, a project valued at £200 million and intended to feature 39 additional courts.
This ambitious redevelopment faces staunch opposition from the campaign group Save Wimbledon Park. The group contends that the land in question is protected by a statutory trust, mandating its use for public recreation. They have initiated legal proceedings to block the AELTC's plans, arguing that this trust has been disregarded.
The AELTC is currently seeking a High Court ruling in London to determine that the land is not subject to such a trust. Their legal team argues that the site has historically never been utilized for public enjoyment, directly countering the campaigners' claims. This marks the latest in a series of legal challenges concerning the expansion.
