Giants' Adames Out for Season After Elbow Injury
29 Aug
Summary
- Willy Adames' elbow injury may end his 2026 season.
- He received a PRP injection and requires rest.
- Prospects will evaluate their roles for the Giants.

San Francisco Giants starting shortstop Willy Adames is facing a potential season-ending left elbow injury. Adames, 30, experienced pain after sliding into home plate during a recent game against the Boston Red Sox. He was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and has undergone a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection.
Doctors have recommended three to four weeks of rest for Adames' non-throwing arm. With the Giants' final game on September 27 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager Tony Vitello acknowledged that Adames' timeline likely means he is done for the year, as returning in the final week would be "somewhat pointless."
The Giants, currently out of postseason contention with 28 games remaining, will use the rest of the season to assess their roster and prospects. President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey stated the team plans to give younger players more opportunities to evaluate their potential.
With Adames sidelined, the responsibility at shortstop will likely fall to Osleivis Basabe, Christian Koss, and Shay Whitcomb. Christian Koss is expected to receive the initial opportunity, having played the position most among the three. Adames is in the second year of a seven-year, $182 million contract.
Despite his offensive struggles this season, hitting .230 with 21 home runs, Adames could theoretically serve as a designated hitter. However, the Giants may prioritize giving at-bats to other players and allowing Adames to fully recover.
