Vollering Wins Weirdest Giro d'Italia Finish Line
23 Jun
Summary
- Demi Vollering secured a shortened queen stage victory in the women's Giro d'Italia.
- An unstable ice slab threat led to a last-minute route change.
- Vollering's win tightens the race for the pink jersey before the final stage.

Demi Vollering emerged victorious on a modified queen stage of the women's Giro d'Italia, an event she described as having the "weirdest finish line" of her career. Organizers made the decision to shorten the eighth and penultimate stage by 28 kilometers. This reduction was a precautionary measure due to an unstable slab of ice that posed a risk to the original summit finish route in Sestriere.
The finish line was hastily relocated to a point one kilometer below the Colle delle Finestre. In a four-way sprint, Dutch rider Vollering of FDJ United-Suez edged out her competitors to claim her second stage win of this year's race. She finished ahead of Isabella Holmgren, Antonia Niedermaier, and her compatriot Anna van der Breggen.
Anna van der Breggen, riding for Team SD Worx-Protime, continues to hold the pink jersey. However, Vollering has successfully reduced Van der Breggen's lead to 49 seconds ahead of the final stage. The last stage, covering over 145 kilometers around Saluzzo, is anticipated to be less challenging but Vollering indicated plans to strategize for a potential overall victory in the Giro.
