Volkanovski eyes Topuria rematch or lightweight title bid

Days after his decisive victory against Movsar Evloev in Abu Dhabi, UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski is setting his sights on future challenges. The Australian champion, now 38, is open to various options, including a potential rematch with Ilia Topuria. Topuria recently moved to lightweight but suffered a loss to Justin Gaethje. The status of the lightweight championship remains uncertain, with Gaethje's next move unconfirmed. Volkanovski indicated interest in competing for a vacant lightweight title, aiming to avenge his sole loss in recent years. He expressed respect for Topuria but emphasized his competitive drive to test himself against the best. A second bout with Topuria could tie their series, offering Volkanovski a chance to retire on a high note or pursue a trilogy.

Ilia Topuria's recent setback at lightweight against Justin Gaethje has influenced potential matchups. If Topuria were to return to featherweight, Volkanovski stated he would be open to a second encounter. However, Volkanovski also highlighted his desire to reclaim a win against the fighter who handed him his only loss over the past two years. The prospect of a superfight continues to be a possibility for Volkanovski as he nears the age of 40. His dominant run in the featherweight division spans nearly five years, with championship fights since December 2019. The UFC has a variety of compelling options for Volkanovski's next outing.
