Summary
- Ben Hammond expected to play more off-ball in new role.

As the 2026-27 basketball season approaches, Virginia Tech is set to feature a reconfigured backcourt under head coach Mike Young. Ben Hammond, a key player, is expected to shift to a shooting guard position, playing more off the ball, a change supported by his enhanced shooting abilities.
Last season, Tyler Johnson's performance was significantly limited by an ankle injury sustained in December, causing him to miss 15 games. Fortunately, the team is now healthy, with Johnson ready to contribute after an abbreviated 2025-26 season.
The Hokies' guard unit also welcomes several new additions, including Jaylen Curry from Oklahoma State, Ethan Copeland from Stetson known for his three-point prowess, and Isaiah Elohim from Florida Atlantic.
Further bolstering the backcourt are Ned Hull, a transfer from Elon; Eltayeb Eltayeb, a Prep All-American; freshman James Caldarella; and Butta Johnson, a transfer from Clemson with NCAA Tournament experience.
Virginia Tech's season begins with two home games against Coppin State on November 3, 2026, and Mercer on November 5, 2026, both at 7 p.m. ET.
