Alonso's Exit Unlocks Vinícius Madrid Deal
16 Jan
Summary
- Xabi Alonso's departure was a key hurdle for Vinícius Jr.'s contract.
- Wage gap remains a significant obstacle to a new deal.
- Bonuses are seen as a potential way to bridge the salary difference.

The departure of Xabi Alonso as Real Madrid coach has dramatically shifted the conditions surrounding Vinícius Júnior's potential contract renewal. Sources reveal that Alonso was considered a primary obstacle to finalizing a new agreement for the star forward, whose current contract extends until June 2027. Renewal discussions had been stagnant since May 2025.
Alonso was replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa after mounting pressure culminated in a Supercopa final defeat. A source indicated that Vinícius's renewal was deemed "non-existent" under Alonso's continued management. Despite Arbeloa's positive reception of Vinícius, a considerable wage disparity remains a significant barrier to a new deal.
Vinícius currently earns approximately €17 million net annually, with Madrid's offer in May 2025 reportedly around €20 million net. The player's camp is seeking an additional €10 million in bonuses. While Madrid is perceived to be near its wage limit, parties believe that improving the offer through bonuses, akin to Kylian Mbappé's deal, could resolve the impasse.
