Veteran Wicket-Keeper Batter Sanju Samson Struggles to Cement His Place
21 Aug
Summary
- Sanju Samson's international career has been inconsistent since 2015
- Despite recent success, he averages only 25.32 in T20I cricket
- Faces intense competition from younger players like Shubman Gill

As of August 21st, 2025, former India selector Devang Gandhi has expressed concerns over Sanju Samson's inconsistent international career. Samson, who secured a place in the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, is once again facing a threat to his spot in the playing XI due to the return of Shubman Gill to the T20I setup.
Samson's international career has been a start-stop affair since his debut in 2015. In the past 10 years, he has managed only 42 appearances, with 18 of them coming after 2024. Despite a recent run of impressive performances as an opening batter, which includes three centuries, Samson still averages a modest 25.32 in T20I cricket.
The Kerala wicket-keeper has also struggled to maintain consistency in the Indian Premier League (IPL), often starting the tournament strongly only to trail off as it progresses. This inconsistency has made it difficult for Samson to cement his place in the national team, with the intense competition from younger players like Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
According to Devang Gandhi, Samson's age, which is close to 31, also works against him compared to his competitors. The former selector acknowledged Samson's talent but emphasized that his inability to be consistently impactful has been the primary reason for his struggles to secure a permanent spot in the Indian team.
