Veteran QB Minshew Embraces Backup Role, Focuses on Self-Improvement with Chiefs

As of August 15th, 2025, veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew finds himself in an unfamiliar position with the Kansas City Chiefs. Unlike his previous stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders, Minshew is not engaged in a quarterback battle for the starting role. Instead, he is content to learn from the best in the business, Patrick Mahomes.
Minshew's approach to the situation has not changed, however. He is determined to get better with every practice rep, not make the same mistakes, and push himself in the ways the coaches ask him to. During the Chiefs' recent 20-17 preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Minshew showcased his skills, going 6-for-9 for 54 yards and rushing for a touchdown before being asked to take a seat.
For Minshew, this is all part of a learning process. He is not in a battle with Mahomes for the starting role, but rather a battle with himself to be ready in case he is needed at some point during the regular season. With the guidance of head coach Andy Reid and the opportunity to learn from the reigning MVP, Minshew feels content in his current situation and is eager to continue his growth as a quarterback.
