Miguel Vargas was the hero on Friday night, launching a two-run home run in the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. This clutch hit pushed the White Sox's record to 30-27, marking a season-best three games above .500.
The White Sox offense had struggled for much of the game, but they managed to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Andrew Benintendi scored from third on Rikuu Nishida's sacrifice bunt, with a heads-up play and a subsequent errant throw aiding the tying run.
After the Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the tenth, the White Sox found themselves down to their final out. Vargas stepped up to the plate and connected with a changeup, sending it over the left-field wall for the walk-off win. The stadium erupted in celebration.
However, the team may have suffered a significant blow. Slugger Munetaka Murakami exited the game in the third inning with tightness in his right hamstring after beating out a grounder. He is currently undergoing further evaluation.
