VAR Gets New Powers: Yellow Cards, Corners Under Review
21 Jan
Summary
- VAR can now review second yellow cards and corner decisions.
- Goalkeepers must take goal kicks and throw-ins within eight seconds.
- New rules aim to limit disruptions and maintain the game's flow.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) has backed expanding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system's capabilities. Under the new proposals, VAR can intervene in cases of second yellow cards, provided there is clear factual evidence of an error, and also review corner kick awards if they are obviously incorrect and can be checked immediately.
Furthermore, Ifab is extending the 'countdown principle' to include goal kicks and throw-ins, requiring goalkeepers to release the ball within eight seconds. These changes, primarily focused on limiting disruptions to the game's flow, were endorsed at a recent business meeting and await ratification. A 10-second limit for substituted players leaving the field has also been introduced.
