The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball team has suffered a major setback with the season-ending ACL tear of newcomer Jaxon Edwards. Edwards sustained the injury on August 30 during a pickup game, just after the team concluded an elite camp.
The severity of the injury could unfortunately end Edwards' collegiate career. This is due to the NCAA's medical hardship waiver deadline of July 31, prior to his injury. Coach Doug Gottlieb expressed deep concern for Edwards, calling the situation 'brutal' and highlighting the athlete's positive impact on the team in his two months with UWGB.
Coach Gottlieb is actively working to appeal the NCAA's decision to ensure Edwards has a chance at an extra year of eligibility. He emphasized that the primary focus is on supporting Edwards, though the team may look to add another player. Edwards and fellow injured teammate Jalen Overway will undergo rehabilitation together, with the goal of Edwards returning to professional basketball.
This injury comes after another significant loss earlier in the offseason, with forward-center Jalen Overway also tearing his ACL and meniscus. Edwards, a 6-5 guard, was expected to fill a key role, replacing departed player CJ O'Hara. Edwards had previously played for Murray State, Valparaiso, St. Bonaventure, and IU Indy.
