USD Coyotes QB Battle Heats Up in Fall Camp

As fall camp progresses towards the August 29 season opener, the University of South Dakota football team is diligently shaping its new-look offense. The most intense focus remains on the quarterback position, where Austyn Modrzewski has been receiving the most first-team reps but faces significant competition from Jackson Proctor and Nevan Cremascoli. Head coach Matt Vitzthum emphasizes that the job is not yet decided, noting the growth and unique skill sets each quarterback brings.

The offensive line presents a complete overhaul, with all five starters from last season gone. Redshirt freshman Lucas Feldkamp has demonstrated considerable versatility, playing multiple positions and emerging as a key player. In contrast, the running back unit appears stable, boasting depth with Charles Pierre Jr., Keyondray Jones-Logan, Carson Fletcher, and Reid Watkins, despite losing a top performer.

New playmakers are being sought at wide receiver, as the team lost its top two threats from the previous year. Tysen Boze and Tennel Bryant are expected to step up, and redshirt freshman Brayden White has shown impressive speed and development. Tight end also presents an opportunity for emergence, with redshirt freshman Chris Herrin receiving high praise for his camp performance.

Coach Vitzthum acknowledges that the team is still developing its offensive identity, particularly in integrating all the new pieces. While a commitment to running the football remains, the staff is focused on strategically placing the right players in optimal positions. The remaining two weeks before the season opener are deemed critical for solidifying roles and finalizing the depth chart.
