US U-20 Women's Squad Selection Amidst Club Conflicts

The U.S. roster for the upcoming under-20 women's World Cup in Poland has been finalized by head coach Vicky Jepson. The squad of 21 players includes eight professionals from the National Women's Soccer League and 13 from NCAA programs. Jepson announced the roster Wednesday, detailing the complex process of player selection and the influence of club decisions regarding player availability.

The U-20 World Cup, scheduled to commence on September 5, presents unique challenges as it falls outside FIFA's designated international windows. This means clubs are not obligated to release players for national team duty. Jepson explained that she personally informed all 55 players considered for the provisional list. She then contacted the clubs and universities of the selected 21 players to discuss their release.

While some NWSL clubs and major college programs, like Racing Louisville and Stanford University, were cooperative, others declined to release players. Jepson noted that such decisions are respected, and the federation will continue to monitor and support players not made available. The U-20 manager highlighted the positive relationship between U.S. Soccer and the NWSL, with a planned data exchange to maintain close collaboration.

The tournament has seen broader uncertainty due to a recently rescinded FIFA proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, which led to threats of boycotts from European, Concacaf, and Asian confederations. However, FIFA has since withdrawn the proposal. The Polish Football Association confirmed that preparations are on track, and no teams have withdrawn. The U.S. will compete in Group D, opening against Italy on September 6.
