The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final is scheduled for Wednesday night, with Columbus Crew playing host to St. Louis City SC. This pivotal match holds immense significance for both teams, particularly for the Crew, who are striving to secure their first U.S. Open Cup title since 2002.
Currently positioned below the playoff line in Major League Soccer, Columbus Crew forward Josef Martinez views this final as a potential season-defining moment. A victory not only secures the prestigious cup but also grants a coveted berth in the Concacaf Champions Cup. The pressure will be on the Crew to perform in front of their home supporters at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio.
Meanwhile, St. Louis City SC enters the final aiming to claim their first-ever trophy. Despite the club's brief existence, the city boasts a rich history in this competition. Coach Yoann Damet has instilled a revitalized spirit in the squad, preparing them for this crucial encounter. The familiarity between the teams, with Damet having prior ties to the Crew's system, adds an intriguing layer to the final.
