Pellegrino Matarazzo etched his name in history on Saturday, becoming the first American coach to claim a major trophy in one of Europe's top-five leagues. His Real Sociedad side secured their first major title since the 2019-2020 season after a tense penalty shootout victory against Atletico Madrid.
The match itself was a dramatic affair, with Real Sociedad taking the lead on two separate occasions. However, Atletico Madrid consistently fought back, leveling the score each time.
A crucial late equalizer from Julian Alvarez sent the game into extra time. Ultimately, it was Real Sociedad's goalkeeper Unai Marrero who became the hero, saving two penalties before substitute Pablo Marin converted the decisive spot-kick to seal the historic win.
