On October 6th, 2025, the Shanghai Masters witnessed a major upset as 54th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech defeated 3rd-seeded Alexander Zverev in the opening round. Zverev, the highest-ranked player left in the draw, initially looked in control after taking the first set. However, Rinderknech fought back, breaking Zverev's serve in the second set and twice in the third to seal the victory in over 2 hours.
This was not the first time Rinderknech had beaten Zverev, as he had also defeated the German player in five sets in the first round at Wimbledon earlier this year. The 30-year-old Rinderknech has now recorded a career-best 23 wins in 2025 and has reached the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event for the third time.
Elsewhere in the tournament, 7th-seeded Alex De Minaur defeated Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets, while 12th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced to the next round. However, defending champion Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from his match due to cramps.
